Her playlist is evil. Most of the time, it’s filled with Disney animated film music hits like “Let it Go” and “Into the Unknown”. However, there’s also the notable addition of the CARS soundtrack. Well, two soundtracks – for two movies, actually. (I think we’ve seen the 3rd one, once).

Sheryl Crow and “Real Gone” apparently conjure up the images of my OTP in a race car world setting. With the main male character a NASCAR (like?) driver – who has a bit of an attitude problem. For some reason, while driving my daughter to school, when this song comes on, I picture a race car…not an animated Lightning McQueen – but a real, red, NASCAR (which I don’t watch) racer – speeding, banking, accelerating… The shift of the gears, the smell of adrenaline-laced sweat. The driver’s awareness of the track, the other cars… The dark asphalt.

The race ends; the driver – the lead character – wins, by a hair. But that’s not the story. He’s raging. It was sheer tenacity mixed with his natural talent and exception skill that kept him in the race when the second place car almost took him out. And our hero is ready to kill. The reporters advance on his car, to congratulate him – but he’s already wrested free of the racing machine and is charging the other driver. The scene ends with our winning lead character assaulting the other driver…

There’s more, of course. There’s a whole story starting to play out in my head of where that goes. I have a whole slate of stories in various states of completion, and somehow… A simple song just sparks the creation of a scenario: Race Car driver with an image problem, trying to come back and compete in some championship race – while the league is watching every move he makes as he’s on probation. A single, divorced mom who works as a PR / image consultant. You can see where this is going, right? Her friend is his agent. Her ex is still in love with her. She apparently had a long distance “thing” for this race car driver when they were younger…

The trick is always in how do I tell something unique that isn’t some rehash of Days of Thunder (which I haven’t seen since it first aired in theaters) or some tired RomCom type of thing? What’s special about this story that it won’t exactly follow a formula…

I’m not there, yet.

Anyway. I really need to write on something that I’ve been posting / I owe. I have some editing to do on Queen of the Night and I need to start posting Santa Baby to Ao3 as part of the Sub-Rosa “Christmas in July” celebration. Santa Baby is quite an old story, but I’m going to see if I can write an epilogue-y thing to the overall series (arc) – that includes Midnight Chimes and Pink Roses, and February Ice… But the days in July are dwindling. So, *sigh* we’ll just have to see what I can manage.

I am hoping that this will be Day 1 of my new writing habit. I’ll do my absolute best to check in tomorrow with what I accomplished today…

Thanks for reading and have a great Tuesday!

Love,

~Rose
